What adaptogens claim
"Adaptogen" is a broad label for herbs — ashwagandha, rhodiola, ginseng and others — said to help the body adapt to stress and restore balance. It's more a marketing umbrella than a precise scientific category, and the quality of evidence varies enormously from one herb to the next. Ashwagandha is the one most worth discussing, because it's the most studied and the claims around it are the most testable.
Ashwagandha: the actual evidence
The strongest, most consistent findings are for stress and anxiety: several trials show meaningful reductions in perceived stress and in the stress hormone cortisol. There's also reasonable support for improved sleep quality. The performance claims are weaker — some studies report modest gains in strength, muscle, and recovery, but they're smaller trials with mixed results, so treat "ashwagandha builds muscle" as unproven rather than established. Realistically, its main plausible value to a lifter is indirect: lower stress and better sleep support recovery, which supports training.
How to use it, if you choose to
If you want to try it, the studied form is usually a standardised root extract (such as KSM-66 or similar) at doses commonly around 300–600 mg a day, often taken in the evening given the sleep and stress angle. Give it several weeks, and judge it honestly against how you feel — stress, sleep, session quality — rather than expecting visible physique changes. It's an experiment with a possible small upside, not a foundation.
Important safety notes: ashwagandha isn't for everyone. Avoid it in pregnancy, and take care if you have thyroid conditions, autoimmune conditions, or take sedatives or other medication — it can interact. There have been rare reports of liver issues. Talk to a doctor before starting, especially if any of the above applies. And because India's supplement market has quality and purity problems, buy a reputable, tested brand.
